Urgent business. Flying to Lima. Back as soon as possible.

E.

She read it again. Urgent business. That could mean anything. For all she knew, that urgent business could have bedroom eyes and shapely legs. But why should she care? It was no secret that Emilio had plenty of women. The fact that she’d slept with him didn’t make her anything special. And she certainly had no right to be jealous.

Was this about last night? She’d been furious, and she’d let him know it. At the time, he’d taken her scolding like a gentleman. But Emilio was first and foremost a Latin male. Being called out by a woman wouldn’t set well with him. What if he’d mulled things over and decided he’d had enough of her?

Annoyed with herself, Grace crumpled the note and flung it into the wastebasket. What was wrong with her? She was behaving like an insecure fool. It wasn’t as if she really cared for him.

Was it?

Knees giving way, she sank onto the bed and buried her face in her hands. On any list of the stupidest things she could do, falling for Emilio Santana would be close to the top. The man was a tabloid superstar with the morals of a tomcat. He’d bedded glamorous women all over the world. To him, she was nothing more than another notch on his bedpost.

If only she could take Zac and run, get to Cusco and catch a flight to someplace where Emilio couldn’t find her. But Grace knew better than to try. Traveling with a small child on a low limit credit card wouldn’t get her far. And even if she could fly to the ends of the earth, Emilio would have the resources to track her down.

Besides, would it be fair to Zac to run? This was his family, his blood, his heritage. Didn’t she want the best for him? Wasn’t it worth some sacrifice on her part to see him well taken care of, settled in a place that tied him to his ancestors and his family legacy?

Leaving, she knew, wasn’t an option. All she could do was stay and try to keep her tumultuous emotions under control. When Emilio returned from Lima she would be here. And if he wanted her, she knew she would be his from the moment he walked through the door.

She’d just have to hope it wouldn’t all end with her broken heart.

* * *

By eleven o’clock that morning, Zac was down for his nap and Grace was enjoying a quiet moment by the pool. She was slipping into a doze when a shadow fell across her face. She opened her eyes to find Pablo standing over her.

Startled, she gasped. A smile lit his movie-star handsome face.

“I am sorry to disturb you, Doña Grace. You have a telephone call.” He handed her the remote receiver, his gaze sliding down her bare legs.

Ignoring him, she sat up and turned away to take the call. He remained in place, standing so close that she could smell the too-sweet cologne on his skin.
